Probolinggo
While the port sides and jetties of Probolinggo tick over to the creak of ships’ hulls and the flapping of fishing nets, the town’s greatest attraction continues to belch plumes of sulphur and smoke into the Indonesian air some 50 kilometers to the southwest. Yes sir, this hubbub of a trading town is now one of the favoured gateways to the famous Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, where the soaring tips of Mount Bromo pierces 2,300 meters above sea level into the clouds. This means that aside from a smattering of mango sellers and the 14th-century Buddhist stupas of Candi Jabung, Probolinggo tour guides mainly offer up adventure tourism. Here hikers have the opportunity to seek out the likes of the Madakaripura Waterfall, the interesting rural villages of the Tengger tribespeople, the scenic Gili Ketapang Island and white water rafting in the Pekalen River hidden within the borders of the national park on the city’s edge.
