Walking Tour of George Town's Street of Harmony
We will start our tour by walking along Pitt Street, also known as "The Street of Harmony." This street is home to four religious places of worship built by migrants in the 19th century. Our first stop will be St. George's Church, the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia. Built in 1817, this church is an impressive example of colonial architecture. Next, we will visit the Goddess of Mercy Temple, a Chinese place of worship for Buddhists and Taoists. This temple is a beautiful and serene place to visit, and it is interesting to observe the religious practices of the Chinese community in Penang. We will then head to the Mahamariamman Temple, a Hindu temple built in 1801. Located in the Little India enclave of George Town, it is a colourful and vibrant place to visit. Our final stop on this tour will be the Kapitan Keling Mosque, built in the 18th century to cater to Muslims. This mosque is an important place of worship for the Muslim community in Penang, and it is an excellent example of Islamic architecture. As we walk along "The Street of Harmony," we will see how George Town is truly a city rich in a diverse community of various faiths that have lived in harmony and tolerance from colonial times to the present.
