Altamura Old Town and Bread Heritage Walk
Discover the medieval town built during the Holy Roman Empire. Enter the historical center through one of the ancient gates and admire the architectural beauties of the churches of St. Blaise, St. Nicholas, the Greek Church, and the Cathedral of Altamura, the only church built by Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen in the Middle Ages. The tour starts from Piazza Zanardelli, from where I will take you into the historic center to visit the ancient shops, the stone streets, and the noble palaces. This lovely walk continues through the typical squares of the old town and along the little streets, where the scent of bread leads you in search of old wood-burning ovens. Even today, bread and "focaccia" are still baked here - a flat bread made from flour, water, salt, yeast, and tomatoes, cooked in a wood oven.
