Explore Historic North Adelaide and Wellington Square
Learn about the history of Adelaide and how Wellington Square got its name. View some historic terrace houses. Make your way to a former private boys' college that has now been converted into a Lutheran Seminary. Walk past Gables House and Belmont House. Head to Kingsmead, an imposing mansion once owned by the influential Bagot family, who originally came from Ireland during the 1830s. Tour Duncraig, built in the late 1890s. It was formerly owned by a highly successful pastoralist and chief engineer who supervised the transformation to electric trams in the early 1900s. Hear about the history of the building that is now used as the Royal College of Surgeons headquarters. Admire the three historic buildings that make up Bishop's Court, Christ Church, and the former Rectory. Bishop's Court has been the residence of every Anglican bishop in Adelaide since the 1850s. Move to Colonel William Light's statue, known as Light's Vision, honouring the man who designed and laid out the plan for this city. Pass by the site where the first public hanging took place in Adelaide during the 1830s. Stop at Carclew, a historic mansion where one of Australia's foremost explorers, John McDouall Stuart, departed on one of his expeditions north to open up pastoral and settlement land to Darwin. See Adelaide's fourth-largest former private hotel, which is now a residential complex. Visit the workers' cottages originally dating from the 1850s. Conclude your tour at Wellington Square.
