    Walking Through Trieste's Historic Heart

Your tour usually starts at the famous Molo Audace Pier, located in the centre of Trieste. After just a short walk across the road, you arrive at one of Italy's most beautiful piazzas, Piazza Unità d'Italia, whose waterside setting offers a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea. The tour then stops at the Romanesque Basilica of San Silvestro. Following the traces of the ancient Romans, you pass by the Arco di Riccardo, a Roman gate in the old defensive wall that once served as the city's only entrance. The walk continues downhill toward the Borgo Teresiano area, passing the Teatro Romano. At the heart of the Borgo Teresiano quarter are the Canale Grande, Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo - the largest Catholic church in Trieste - and the splendid Serbian Orthodox Church of San Spiridion. The sides of the Canale Grande are lined with magnificently elegant Neoclassical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and on the Ponte Rosso bridge, visitors are greeted by a life-size bronze statue of James Joyce. The walking tour ends at the impressive Piazza della Borsa, where visitors can linger and admire the Fontana del Nettuno and other historical palaces representing a variety of artistic styles, including Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Italian rationalism.
