La Rochelle Towers, Old Walls and Historic Harbour

Begin your tour outside the Chain Tower, where you will briefly discuss its history before continuing to the Lantern Tower and ending at the Saint Nicholas Tower. Walk along Rue Sur-Les-Murs, the only surviving section of the walls of La Rochelle. Pass by the Vieux Port and Porte des Deux Moulins before stopping beside Plage de la Concurrence to discuss the western side of La Rochelle, including the new port and its role in World War 2. Stop outside the Grosse Horloge to discuss the old city of La Rochelle, including the original city walls and trade during this period. Pass by the statue of Admiral Duperre, a French war hero. Learn about the role of Hotel de Ville, the oldest working town hall in France, in the development of La Rochelle. Continue through the park on your way back from the western part of La Rochelle to the town centre. See Eglise St-Sauveur, the famous relic of La Rochelle, and discuss its significance as an example of the effects of the iconoclastic wars. Stroll through Quartier Saint Nicolas, a bohemian neighbourhood, discovering some of its unique boutiques and bars along the way. End the tour at Phare du quai Valin and discuss the importance the two lighthouses had for maritime navigation in La Rochelle.
