Pula's Roman Landmarks and Historic Old Town
We will begin our tour at the Roman Amphitheatre, which is 2000 years old. We will talk about this amazing monument, built at the same time as the Colosseum in Rome. It is one of the best-preserved and the 6th biggest Roman amphitheatres in the world. We will discuss how and why it was built and take a sneak peek inside the Amphitheatre. Then, we will visit the Twin Gates. In one place, across just five buildings, we can see the most important stages of Pula's history - all the way from the Histri era to the present day. Moving ahead, you will admire the Hercules Gate, the oldest preserved monument in Pula, dedicated to the Roman god Hercules. Next, we will visit the Arch of the Sergii, a great architectural masterpiece that has stood at the main entrance to the old city for 2000 years. It was admired by many artists and used as inspiration by Michelangelo. The next leg of our tour is the Foro Romano (Roman Square), the main square of Roman Pula and the centre of administration, religion, and public life for 2000 years. Towards the end, we will visit the Augustus Temple, an amazing monument built 2000 years ago, with a lot of history to tell. We will end our tour at the Kastel, the hill in the centre of town - the site of the first settlement of the Illyrian tribe Histri 3000 years ago. It is now a Venetian star-shaped fortress from the 17th century, with a panoramic view of the harbour and the city.
