Walking Tour Through Rovinj's Picturesque Old Town
Let's start our tour from the town square, where we can see a small stone fountain that was placed here when the town first got its aqueduct. Next, we will walk towards Balbi's Arch, the entryway to the town's oldest and most protected part. We'll walk down the narrow cobbled streets and see the old traditional houses that were erected on the rocks when this part of Rovinj was an island. As we explore the area, the guide will teach you some Croatian phrases. Continuing our tour, we will head to the most famous street in town - the street named after the artist called Grisia. Once we reach the top, we'll see the church on the top of the hill, where we can admire the marble sarcophagus holding the body of a local patron, Saint Eufemia. Next, we will make our way to the Main Square, which serves as the centre of social mingling and activity in the town. Walking by the farmers' market, we will see the locals buying and selling fresh produce and fish. From there, we will enter the old city through the Venetian arch and find ourselves in front of the ancient City Hall. The uphill road and cobblestone streets will take us slowly to the old square, Piazza Grande. Here, we'll admire the late Renaissance buildings that will take your breath away and feel the local charm, part of which is the laundry hanging out of the windows! We will continue to yet another square to explore its tiny church and see one of the oldest entrances to the old city of Rovinj. Walking through old and dark passages intersected with squares and small galleries, we will reach the top of the hill, where you will be surprised by the beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea and the islands around Rovinj. Finally, we'll explore the baroque church and learn about the legend surrounding the local saint before returning to the town square and ending our tour with stories about Rovinj's colourful history.
