Old Town Landmarks and the Imperial Castle

Altes Rathaus - We begin at the Old Town Hall, where Nuremberg's powerful council administered justice and shaped trade policy across medieval Europe. St. Sebald Church - One of the oldest churches in Germany, consecrated in 1274, and home to the bronze shrine of St. Sebaldus, a masterpiece of late medieval craftsmanship. Hauptmarkt - The political and commercial heart of the Imperial City, with the Beautiful Fountain and the Church of Our Lady, where imperial ceremonies and daily trade once defined public life. Ochsenportal - A remarkable medieval gateway that reflects the architectural ambition and defensive thinking of the former Imperial City. Trödelmarkt - A historic island market square in the middle of the Pegnitz River, one of the quieter and most atmospheric spots in the Old Town. Henkersteg - A 15th-century covered wooden bridge, the executioner's private crossing over the river, with one of the best views along the Pegnitz. Maxbrücke - One of Nuremberg's historic river crossings, offering a view over the Pegnitz and the medieval cityscape. Kettensteg - Germany's oldest surviving iron chain bridge, built in 1824, marking the transition from medieval construction to early industrial engineering. Weissgerbergasse - The best-preserved row of half-timbered houses in Nuremberg, largely intact after the destruction of 1945. Albrecht Dürer's House - The residence and workplace of Nuremberg's most renowned Renaissance artist from 1509 until his death in 1528. Burggarten - The castle gardens offer a first elevated view over the Old Town before we ascend to the castle itself. Imperial Castle of Nuremberg - We conclude at the Imperial Castle, one of the principal residences of the Holy Roman Emperors for centuries, with a panoramic view over the entire Old Town from the Freiung.
