Explore Ollantaytambo's Inca Fortress and Ancient Town
Meet your tour guide, who will take you through Ollantaytambo to see a battlefield, a fortress, and a temple built over five centuries ago by the Incas, one of the greatest civilizations of South America. Start the experience at an Inca crop terrace located 9,000 ft (2,700 mts) above sea level, and take in the amazing views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, surrounded by imposing mountains. The terraces are well known for growing crops, an important aspect of Inca life in the past and for contemporary use. Walk up the stone steps to visit the Temple of the Sun and witness one of the most impressive Inca altars, made with stones weighing more than 50 tons and brought to the site from far away. Uncover some of the greatest mysteries of Inca architecture along the way, including how they moved giant stones from one mountaintop to another and how they cut the stones to fit each other perfectly. Continue through the remnants of this old battlefield town and listen to the epic story of the Battle of Ollantaytambo, where the Incas defeated the Spanish conquistadores with unbelievable tactics. Also, see the fortified defences that gave the town its precious victory. After descending from Ollantaytambo, explore the ancient town itself. Walk down the narrow, pebbled stone streets and see the ancient water canals and the ruins along the mountains, all testament to one of the greatest civilizations South America has ever seen. Visit a local family in their hundred-year-old home and learn more about local traditions, such as hanging skulls on the walls and having guinea pigs roaming about the floors.
