Ravenna's UNESCO Mosaics and Dante Heritage
See the Basilica of Saint Apollinare Nuovo, which bears witness to the barbarian domination. Discover the traces of the Venetian period at Piazza del Popolo, Ravenna's main square. Visit the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built to house the Roman empress' remains, which represents classical Roman style and culture. See the Basilica of San Vitale, probably the most important Byzantine church in the West and one of the symbols of Ravenna's remarkable past. See the Neonian Baptistery, the most ancient monument in town, dating back to the early 5th century. See the Chapel of Saint Andrew, beautifully decorated with mosaics, where the first Christian bishops went to pray. Ravenna is also the town where the Florentine poet Dante Alighieri found shelter during his exile and completed his Divine Comedy. We will walk through the so-called zona Dantesca (Dante's zone), dedicated to the Great Poet, where Ravenna's citizens keep silent to respect his memory. Visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, where Dante's funeral was held in 1321, and discover its fascinating crypt.
