    Day 01

Bologna's Medieval Heart, Santo Stefano and Food Market

Start from several highlights located all around the great medieval square, Piazza Maggiore. Discover several secret gems here, such as the great sundial of San Petronio and the frescoes of the Gothic Chapel Bolognini, and witness the city's great past. Visit the gorgeous medieval City Hall, with its painted rooms, clock tower, and the huge staircase planned by Bramante for horsemen and knights. Later, cross the neighbourhood of the 2 medieval towers, built more than 900 years ago. Reach the Romanesque monument of Santo Stefano. This cluster of old pagan temples, turned into churches and then transformed into a Benedictine abbey, was begun at the will of a bishop to represent a little sample of Jerusalem. Stop by the ancient headquarters of the oldest University in Europe. The hidden pearl of this building is the 17th-century wooden theatre, used by doctors and surgeons for their lessons and demonstrations. Wander around the crowded heart of the food city, the old market, and enjoy quaint views and delicacies tastings, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Mortadella, fresh homemade pasta, and a wide range of top-quality local DOC red and white wines to choose from.
