    Day 01

Discover Rashid's Museum, Ottoman Heritage and Qaitbey Citadel

Meet your tour guide at your hotel, or at the cruise exit point, at around 08:00 am and transfer by modern air-conditioned vehicle, including bottled water, from Alexandria to the city of Rosetta, now known as Rashid. The drive takes about 1 hour. Visit the Rashid Museum, one of the city's original and distinctive red-and-black brick houses, set within its small winding streets. Enjoy a full guided tour of the museum and discover a replica of the Rosetta Stone, inscribed in three languages: Ancient Pharaonic, Demotic, and Ancient Greek. The original is currently on display in the British Museum. Take a walking tour through the small local streets and souq to discover local life and markets selling fresh bread, fruit and vegetables, fish, and meat, while heading towards the preserved Ottoman homes. Continue to discover a second house within the city's streets, along with other old house frontages. The House of Amasyali is especially ornate and is considered one of the finer examples. Head to the Mill of Abu Shaheen, which reveals a house of trade that once served both the household and the local community. After touring the houses, walk a short distance with your guide to visit the local Hanging Mosque, a uniquely constructed mosque and one of only a few in Egypt built on an upper level, with storage units underneath for shops and supplies. Drive to the citadel on the outskirts of the city. Built around 1479 and lying next to the Nile River with views of the Mediterranean Sea, Qaitbey Citadel was constructed as a defence against attacks by invaders from the Mediterranean. Take time to climb to the top along the fortified walls and enjoy the lovely views of where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. Leave the citadel and head back towards Alexandria, stopping for lunch and time to relax before returning to your cruise or hotel in Alexandria.
