Explore the Historic Jewish Ghetto of Venice
As we journey through the history of the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, we will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the Jewish community during the Renaissance and beyond. By visiting historic landmarks and learning the stories of the people who lived there, we will gain a unique insight into the area's rich cultural heritage. At Ghetto Vecchio, we will explore the narrow alleys and tight-knit communities of the world's first Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516 by the Doge of Venice. The district was created as a way of controlling and monitoring the Jewish population, but it also provided a sense of safety and security for its residents. Next, we will visit Campo Ghetto Novo, where we will discover the hidden synagogues and learn about the rich religious and cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Venice. We will also visit Venice's oldest pawnshop, which was a vital source of financial support for many Jewish families in the area. Towards the end of our tour, we will visit the newest area of the Ghetto, where we will learn about Napoleon's decision to symbolically open the district's gates and the impact it had on the Jewish community. Finally, we will end our tour with a pleasant view of Cannaregio, the most authentic sestiere of Venice, with its beautiful bridges and canals. By the end of our tour, you will have a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Venice and the impact it has had on the city's history.
